20 Racing Questions: who am I?
20 Racing Questions: who am I?
Welcome to the ninth quiz in the Racing Hub series 20 Racing Questions, each one on a specific theme – this quiz is called “Who am I”, with the questions containing clues to the racing participant’s identity.
There’s a link to more quizzes down the page, but be careful to avoid the answers. The answers to this quiz will be posted later in the week.
1 – Born in 1982, I’ve helped break down a few barriers in the sport and had over 800 winners, of which Mullitovermaurice was a significant victory but not the most important. There have been a few ups and downs since my first winner at Pontefract. Who am I?
2 – I come from what has become a racing dynasty. Born in 1998, I’ve hade 30 winners at Group level at such venues as Ascot, the Curragh, Doncaster, Epsom and Newmarket. Intricately is a special horse for me. Who am I?
3 – I have had a long and illustrious life in racing but that’s not where I began after graduating from Oxford. I’ve captured some of the biggest races in the sport and, in different ways, have been connected with two of its most famous participants. In later years, my involvement with racing has taken on a different course. Who am I?
4 – With racing blood in my veins, and a career that began in bloodstock, it’s no surprise that I’m now involved in helping to maintain the success of one of the sport’s most important enterprises, whose colours are recognised throughout the world. I also have a particular affinity with a major British racecourse. Who am I?
5 – I’ve made quite an impression since my racecourse debut and have already picked up victories at the highest level since a modest start at Wolverhampton. Like a lot of racing’s participants, the lockdown has been frustrating as I’m keen to further my promising career. Who am I?
6 – Born in Scotland, I’ve had a number of wins at the Cheltenham Festival, having honed my skills at Barbury Castle. I have also had some notable victories on the Flat where last year I took home nearly £650,000 in prize money. Throughout the winter, people can share my views on racing every Wednesday. Who am I?
7 – I am one of the more energetic people at the racecourse and can be found in both the betting ring and the parade ring, expressing opinions and cross-examining the sport’s participants. I also have an opportunity to present my strident views but I’m not everyone’s Favourite. Who am I?
8 – I cover a lot of turf in Surrey, and need to keep a watchful eye on the weather, trying to anticipate mother nature’s ups and downs, so that I can achieve what’s good for the sport. Who am I?
9 – Born in 1995, I’ve reached the top in a racing career having made an impact in my first season, with a four-timer at Ayr including the Scottish track’s premier Flat race, the Ayr Gold Cup. Since then I’ve gone on to win at the highest level and had victories in seven countries, but a Classic win has so far been elusive. Who am I?
10 – Having first sat in the saddle at the age of four, I’ve went on to have my first winner in 2008 and have since had victories at the Cheltenham Festival which included four wins at Grade 1 level. My winning strike rate, including winners in the JP McManus colours, for the 2019-20 season was 26%. Who am I?
11 – I began work as a hairdresser, but turned to a more lucrative career in 1968 and built a nationwide empire which resulted in the accumulation of considerable wealth. Tornado Prince was my first racehorse, acquired in 1973, and I’ve since been involved in a hugely successful partnership, with wins at the very highest level. Perhaps the only aspect of my sporting life which has not been so successful is the football team I support – West Ham. Who am I?
12 – Having had a dozen Cheltenham Festival winners, I’ve now turned my attention to the Flat and have sent in six winners at Royal Ascot, and just missed out on victory in the Breeders’ Cup. Always on the lookout for new owners, my hook is: “Owning a racehorse will not always enhance your bank balance but the experience will always enhance your life”. Who am I?
13 – I’m known as the Sage of Halifax, and I’ve been a professional observer of racing since 1974, working my way up to giving horses the dreaded “squiggle”. My punditry has now reached a larger audience. Who am I?
14 – After a short career in the army, during which I still managed to have winners at Sandown, I turned to my attention to racing full-time, and have broken through the 200 winners mark, including breaking my duck at the Cheltenham Festival. The 2019/20 season saw me achieve success in 46 races from 50 horses. Who am I?
15 – I am not the most communicative of people but during the course of May 2020 I let bygones by bygones and took part in an interview with Lee Mottershead of the Racing Post, having previously held the Post at arm’s length after their reporting of an injury I sustained. Who am I?
16 – Our wealth is estimated by the latest Sunday Times Rich List to be £16bn, amassed through a range of business interests, but it represents a drop of over £2.5bn for the two of us, with the shutdown of our racecourses hitting us hard. Who are we?
17 – I’m the son of a diplomat and studied law, but decided to enter the world of horseracing, starting out as a groom. That led to me riding in jump races where I was a leading jockey. Since then I have gone on to greater things, not least being responsible for eight winners of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Who am I?
18 – It’s possible I could be mistaken for someone else, but you will have seen me in the winners’ enclosure after two Classic wins, and two at Royal Ascot. That was after my first ever runner won on his debut at Wolverhampton. There have also been five Group 1 wins at Epsom, Newbury and Newmarket. Who am I?
19 – Born in 1980, I had my first Classic winner just 17 years later, in the Irish 1000 Guineas. There have since been six Classic wins either side of the Irish Sea, as well as a host of other Group 1 wins including victories across the Channel. But, the biggest clue to my identity is my predilection for holding up horses late in the race in order to win, or, sometimes not. Who am I?
20 – Born in 1995, I’ve helped break down a few barriers in the sport and had nearly 150 winners, of which Pacha Du Polder was a significant victory but not the most important. There have been a few ups and downs since my first winner at Fontwell. Who am I?
