County Handicap Hurdle Trends

Before the festival it is always important to carefully research the races before having a bet in them. One way of doing this is to look at the key trends from the race.

@Cameron3012 has compiled the following trends to help pick this years County Handicap Hurdle winner!

County Handicap Hurdle Trends 2017:

  • 16/17 had an official rating between 128 and 145 (the last 11 were rated in the 130’s, avoid horses at the head of the weights who hardly ever place)
  • 35/41 started at no bigger than 16-1 (Wicklow Brave 2015 winner was 25-1 with no form going into the race)
  • 11/16 had their prep run within 35 days of race day (although 4 of the last 6 (2-Mullins, 1-Martin, 1 Nicholls) all ran in January creating a new mini trend. Last year’s winner, Superb Story broke this trend with a layoff of 124 days)
  • 15/17 carried 11st 1lbs or less (compressed weights again so not much of an angle here)
  • 12/17 ran at least 4 times that season (Lac Fontana 2014 winner raced 3 times)
  • 41/53 were 5 yr olds (9 of the last 16) 2013-Ted Veale was 6. 2015-Wicklow Brave was 6. 2016- Superb Story was 5)
  • 12/17 were making their first appearance at the festival
  • 10/17 were in the top 3 last time out
  • Just 5 winners were aged over 7 since 1959
  • The Irish have won 7 of the last 10
  • Ruby Walsh is 4/13 (a brilliant record in this)
  • 10/16 in first 5 in the betting
  • Only 3 winners since 1960 have carried 11st 2 plus to victory
  • One British trained winner (last year Superb Story) since 2005
  • 14/14 either a novice (7) or a second season hurdler (7)
  • 61/61 handicap debutants have failed
