Grand Annual Chase Trends

Before the festival it is always important to carefully research the races before having a bet in them. One way of doing this is to look at the key trends from the race.

@Cameron3012 has compiled the following trends to help pick this years Grand Annual Chase winners!

Grand Annual Chase Trends 2017:

  • 14/15 carried 11 Stone or less to victory (Savello bucked the trend 2014 as did Next Sensation in 2015 carrying 11st 2 – Last year’s winner Solar Impulse carried 11 stone dead – is the cream coming to the top?)
  • 16/16 had no more than 12 runs over fences
  • 11/15 finished in the first 3 LTO (Next Sensation 4th LTO and Solar Impulse had been pulled up before his win)
  • 14/15 were aged 9 or under
  • 9/18 were 8-1 or below but there have been a number of higher priced winners in recent years (including 2015’s winner at 16-1 and 2016’s at 28-1)
  • 10/14 had finished placed in a Grade 3 chase or better (Alderwood in 2013 actually won a Grade 1 hurdle. Savello finished 4th in a Grade 2 hurdle . Next Sensation placed in the previous  year’s Grand Annual. Solar Impulse won having been placed in a G2 chase before his win, look for an animal with a bit of class)
  • Used to be that you looked for lower rated horses, 10/14 rated 134 or lower (Alderwood was rated 135 so just missed the stat. Narrow window used to  help to narrow down the field – remember to look at apprentice allowances)
  • 10/12 were French or Irish bred horses
  • 8/12 yet to win a handicap chase
  • 6/12 had won at Cheltenham before
  • 5/12 had previously run in the Grand Annual

2015 Result- 1st. Nest Sensation, 2nd. Eastlake, 3rd. Croco Bay, 4th. Ned Buntline, 5th. Turn over Sivola, 6th. Dick Dundee, 7th. Ted Veale

2016 Result- 1st. Solar Impulse, 2nd. Dandridge, 3rd. Rock the World, 4th. Savello, (previous winner) 5th. Pearls Legend, 6th. Red Spinner, 7th. Dresden

  • JP McManus has had a few recent successes in this so take his charge seriously especially if within the 138 to 147 band in my view, with graded chase form in the book
