6 – What, on August Bank Holiday Monday in 1974, did Cartmel, Plumpton and Southwell have in common? The three racecourses were involved in the Gay Future affair. Before the races, thousands of bets were bet on the three horses in double and trebles, but then the Plumpton and Southwell clerks of the courses were informed that the horseboxes bringing the runners had broken down. The bets all went onto Gay Future but bookmakers were unable to phone through to Cartmel to return money to the ring and Gay Future was an easy winner. The attempted coup was exposed when a reporter telephoned the trainer, Tony Collins, but the only person at the yard was the housekeeper who innocently said the two “non-runners” were at the stables.
