Whistlejacket’s big race reviews and pointers: Newbury and Newcastle
Whistlejacket reviews Saturday’s big races and comes away with some pointers
BetVictor Fighting Fifth, Newcastle 1 December, 2m Soft
1 Buveur D’Air 11/8 Barry Geraghty 11 7 winning trainer Nicky Henderson
2 8l Samcro 6/5 Fav William Kennedy 11 7
Not much to say about this except that Buveur d’Air, although carrying some condition, proved much the best.
In terms of the Champion Hurdle, I wouldn’t be taking an ante post price though, as he may be bigger on the day, unless of course, he scares off most of the opposition.
Samcro ran well, although to me he looks like a natural chaser and probably already wants a trip. He looks like a place lay to me in this race.
We haven’t seen Melon out yet and he still looks the most likely to trouble the defending champion, as Laurina will presumably go for the mares’ race.
Global Citizen won nicely at Newbury yesterday and could be an each-way player.
Ladbroke Trophy, Newbury 1 December, 3m 1f Soft
1 Sizing Tennessee 12/1 T Scudamore 11 3 winning trainer Colin Tizzard
2 10l Elegant Escape 4/1 Harry Cobden 11 10
3 7l Dingo Dollar 10/1 Wayne Hutchinson 11 3
Not the greatest renewal but Sizing Tennessee did have some classy form, he was from the in form Tizzard yard and he was allowed to go off at 12-1. One for the National but he will have no secrets from the Handicapper. I think this was his day and I can’t see him improving at 10, rising 11.
Given his inexperience and lack of jumping fluency, I thought Elegant Escape ran a fine race and I would be keen on him next time, maybe after a break.
I backed Dingo Dollar each way in this and was pleased by his effort. Indeed, given he was on the front end all the way and they went pretty quick in the conditions, I would be keen to back him next time on better ground.
I liked Ms Parfois’ effort and on better ground she could also be one to note.
Personally, I wouldn’t be keen on Beware the Bear as he ran on through beaten horses and wasn’t especially fluent, although he is in the Henderson yard so maybe he might come good in a slog.
